About
I became interested in the weather long ago, with my second grade diary project being about the weather (keeping track of high/low and weather conditions daily). I was able to see my first tornado when I was in elementary school, watching a nighttime tornado that was ~15 miles north of my home in northwest Iowa. Since then I have been able to witness several dozen tornadoes over the past couple of years as I chased the Plains states with the likes of Tim Samaras, Tony Laubach, Dr. Bruce Lee and Dr. Cathy Finley, among others participating in the TWISTEX Project; and chasing independently. I hope to continue chasing the plains for several more decades…
I attended Iowa State University after graduating high school in 2005, and I immediately began to pursue a degree in Meteorology. I was happy to accomplish my goals, obtaining a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Meteorology from Iowa State in May 2009, with a minor in Geology(Hydrology). Upon graduation I returned back to northwest Iowa to be with my fiance and my newborn son Brayden, and to begin my job search. At the start of 2010 I accepted a job and moved to a suburb of Kansas City to begin my working life as an operational meteorologist with a private consulting meteorology company Weather or Not, Inc. After a year or so in apartment life and with our family expanding we bought a home in 2011 in Gardner, KS (just southwest of Kansas City). The entire family, now 4 of us, Alyssa, Brayden, Keatyn & I, enjoy everyday together with the opportunities we have.
Other than meteorology and storm chasing I enjoy spending time outdoors with my family. The prairies and grasslands that I grew up by are a passion of mine, viewing the land much like it looks like across the Great Plains a hundred years ago is a great sight to see. Photography is another passion, capturing moments of family and friends, sporting events and other of those natural scenic views. I previously operated a part-time business, Jayson Prentice Photography, where I took basic portraits, engagement and wedding photography and also worked for a small newspaper taking pictures at athletic events and writing sports stories. I continue to take portraits on occasion, otherwise I mainly take general landscapes and images of family/friends.
I enjoy keeping up my site with general thoughts on weather, forecasts and neat things that I come across throughout the day. If you enjoy my site be sure to let me know, find me on Twitter and send a message or throw an e-mail my way using the Contact page.
