Temperatures & Precipitation

Westerly (Chinook) winds led to well above normal and record-setting high temperatures for January 9-10 over the Northern & Central Plains. A strong cold front then pushed across this region on January 11-12, plunging temperatures to below normal values over the Northern Plains with single digits over northern Minnesota. This front continues to push east, bringing a good dip in temperatures to the Great Lakes and Midwest regions and soon the Northeast as we head through this weekend. Precipitation was sparse over much of northwestern half of the CONUS this past week with showers and thunderstorms leading to good precipitation amounts from Texas to the Southeast and Northeast. Lake effect snow led to some higher amounts to the south/east of the Great Lakes, especially around the Buffalo and north of Syracuse, NY.
